The first was thanks to a 3-0 win over Spanish side Valencia, with a goal from Steve McManaman on top. The first victory dates back to 2002, when Zinedine Zidane scored a magnificent goal against Bayern Leverkusen at Glasgow's Hampden Park. A year later they knocked out bitter rivals Barca in the semi-finals.
Let us clarify this question with a simple plot. The following graph shows the development of the number of league teams. As the plot of the first year of the league shows, we can observe that there is a slight prominence of sports clubs, but it is not a hegemonic league and it is certainly not dominated by clubs.
In April 1927, Jose Acha, director of the Arenas Club de Gexo, proposed the idea of a national league in Spain. The initiative of a Catalan championship for national football, which had developed since 1900, finally reached its completion in 1929 with the founding of La Liga.
The Spanish league has long been dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona. In the mid-1950s, Real Madrid took control of La Liga, and Atlético Madrid was their only serious rival. In the 1989-90 season, Real were 15 leagues higher than Barcelona. In the beginning, however, the league was not as hegemonic as it is today, nor was it dominated by clubs.
The first football league in Spain was the Catalan Football Championship or Campionat Catalunya, which was founded in 1901. It was with La Liga for a year before it was abolished in 1940. Since 1997, 20 clubs have been in La Liga's top division. La Liga Spain was founded in 1929, the first season began in February of the same year and ended in June.
The top four teams in La Liga qualify for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. The winner of the Champions League and UEFA Europa League will also qualify for this season. The fifth-placed La Liga side qualify for the group stage of the Europa League. That means six La Liga teams qualify, but the fourth-placed team in the league plays in the Europa League as a nation limited to a maximum of five teams.
Seventy years later, on 28 September 2007, Barcelona applied to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (the Spanish acronym for the RFEF) to recognise the title as a league title. The request was taken seriously as the FA had previously asked to recognise Levante's Copa de la Espana Libre, which won the equivalent of the Copa del Rey. However, the FA did not make a final decision.
While Barcelona won the Premier League in 1929 and Real Madrid won their first title in 1932-1933, it was Athletic Bilbao who dominated La Liga in the early years, winning in 1930, 1931, 1934 and 1936. They also finished runners-up in 1932 and 1933. In 1935, Real Betis (now Betis Balompie) won its first title.
